January 2012 Faculty Recognition

  • Younane Abousleiman (Integrated PoroMechanics Institute) and Roger Slatt (Geology & Geophysics) presented a poster titled "Multi-scale, Brittle-Ductile Couplets in Unconventional Gas Shales: Merging Sequence Stratigraphy and Geomechanics" at the 2011 American Association of Petroleum Geologist annual convention. It was selected for the Jules Braunstein Award (best poster at the convention) and the Loyd Carlson Memorial Award (best poster by one of the AAPG divisions). 
  • Michael G. Bemben (Health and Exercise Science) was inducted as a Fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology last September. He is fellow number 504 since this organization was founded in 1926. 
  • Sara Ann (Sally) Beach (Ruby Grant Reading Research Initiative) has been appointed to the Technical Content Working Group for English Language Arts/Literacy by the governing board of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness of College and Careers (PARCC). This group will help guide the development of PARCC’s development of professional development plans, instructional materials and the next-generation assessment system to be used nationwide in assessing the Common Core State Standards in Literacy that will help ensure that students from across the nation are prepared for college and careers. 
  • Mary Margaret Holt (School of Dance) was invited to create choreography to the music of Norman Dello Joio for the debut concert of the Norman Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at the Nancy O'Brian Center for the Arts. Holt created choreography for four sections of Dello Joio's music based on Ecclesiates for the concert. Dancers were School of Dance lecturer Holly Schmidt, ballet performance junior Austin Lintner and modern dance performance senior Renee Beneteau. 
  • The research directed by Roger Harrison (Chemical, Biological & Materials Engineering) on the project “New Enzyme Prodrug and Methionine-Depletion Combination Therapy of Breast Cancer Designed for Effective Delivery to the Tumor” was highlighted in the latest program book for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs’ Breast Cancer Research Program, available online at http://cdmrp.army.mil/pubs/pips/bcpip.pdf
  • Kevin Butterfield (Classics & Letters) has been awarded a prestigious NEH Fellowship to spend next year working on his research at the New York Historical Society Museum and Library.
